What is The Journey?

We are passionate about Africa. We love her people, her vibrancy, her natural splendour. We want to show you that self-drive travel across Africa is safe and affordable, and that taking time to get in touch with the real, rural Africa can change your perceptions of life, and enrich your world.

Our team of four is taking to the road for 100 days, driving from Cape Town to Kenya and back, through ten Southern and East African countries, spreading the word along the way to support Open Africa’s cause.

Before the beginning...

After 18 months of planning, dreaming, list-making and more planning, finally we put rubber to tar and hit the road, but not before a few mishaps had to be smoothed over....

In the past 6 months, while I sat in Cape Town holding my first job together and at the same time trying to weave time in my day to look for sponsorship, contact media partners, build the concept of “The Journey” into a reality and tick off each item on my endless list of ‘things to do’ (which I will post up later for you to see), Tom resigned from his job managing a lodge in Kenya and bought a ticket to Cape Town, and Jazelle and Robbie, the young newly weds, quit their jobs too, sold their cars and bought one-way tickets back to the Mother Continent from the land down under the land down under – New Zealand.

We all came together from different parts of the world with one same dream and vision…to travel and discover Africa, the heart of the world and our home.

The original plan became Plan B (and then Plan C and D) after The Journey came to life in a rather more colourful way than we expected. Originally intended to be a sponsored drive, where a partner would cover the costs and provide a vehicle, and where we would give them significant marketing mileage, The Journey then became our baby completely. Sponsorship proved extremely difficult to find in this economic climate, and with the time constraints we were working against.

So, we decided a silly issue like money is not going to stop us, and each scrambled together R20 000 to live this adventure. The Journey went from being a rather serious business deal and commitment, to being a once-in-a-lifetime experience, BUT on a tight budget…which we think is far more real and exciting.

With this trip we hope to inspire you to abandon all inhibitions, get in your car and go…wherever the road takes you.

  2. Hi there hope your coming week treats you well - may the force be with you...
Just a thought, I would really appreciate it if you would give us more detail on the places you stay in - it is such a tease to call a guesthouse quirky or unusual and not explain.. It is the details I want - they say curiosity killed the cat, but this cat knows that satisfaction brings it back?!
